China's vegetable exports have strong comparative competitive advantages

1. The demand in the international vegetable market continues to increase

In recent years, the annual trade volume of vegetables worldwide has been continuously increasing. At present, the self-sufficiency rate of vegetables in some developed countries continues to decline, such as Canada at 77%, the United Kingdom at 76%, Japan at 50%, and Switzerland at 42.6%. The international market vegetable trade volume has reached 10 billion US dollars, with the most significant increase in tomatoes, edible mushrooms, onions, and garlic. With the improvement of international transportation conditions and storage and preservation technologies, as well as the improvement of people's living standards, their dietary structure will shift from a basic and nutritious diet to a health oriented one. At present, economically developed countries such as the United States and European countries are vigorously promoting vegetarianism as the mainstay, and vegetables have health benefits that cannot be replaced by any other food. Therefore, this will lead to a sharp increase in global demand for vegetables, and also bring huge opportunities for China's vegetable exports.

2. China's vegetable exports have a strong comparative competitive advantage

Due to the labor-intensive nature of vegetable production, the level of mechanization is relatively low, and the vast majority of agricultural work requires manual operation, resulting in high labor intensity and difficulty in effectively replacing labor with capital. In developed countries, labor prices are relatively high and continue to rise, leading to a continuous increase in vegetable production costs. Therefore, for the sake of economic interests, they have relatively weakened vegetable production. In contrast, the production cost of vegetables in China is relatively low, with domestic vegetable prices being about 1/5 to 1/8 of foreign prices, demonstrating strong price competitiveness. Moreover, China has abundant vegetable resources and favorable natural conditions, with a wide variety of famous and excellent vegetables from various regions, creating a good foundation for export trade.

After joining the WTO, the various tariff and non-tariff barriers faced by China's vegetable exports have been greatly reduced

In the past, the strong price competitiveness of vegetables in China has had a significant impact on agriculture in some developed countries. In order to protect their own agriculture, some countries often impose sanctions on China's vegetable exports under the pretext of anti-dumping, anti subsidy, and environmental protection. And China's world will greatly reduce various tariff and non-tariff thresholds. At the same time, China can effectively solve the problem of unfair treatment in vegetable exports by utilizing relevant rules of the World Trade Organization.
